Can we be friends?

"Can we be friends?" You softly spoke,

A question lingering like wisps of smoke.

Absolutely I thought, what harm could it bring

And I took it upon myself to learn all your favorite things,

And its just like me to jump in too deep

Not think about the consequences, just taking the leap

We embarked on a journey, hand in hand,

Into a realm where undefined emotions expand.

For within its grasp, love danced merrily.

Like sunlight filtering through a cloudy sky,

Our connection blossomed, intensifying deeply.

And the word “friends” faded away, because we were finally more.

Yet I’ve noticed you always had one foot out the door

It was a spider's web, delicate and deceiving,

A trap of emotions concealed, silently grieving.

How could you cry when you have no right to?

We’re not exactly friends but we’re not more too?

Stuck in the in-between waiting for you

How do you answer people when they ask who’s with you?

You’ve called me yours a few times

But I never had the luxury to call you mine

And then it all simmered down that one night

and I saw it coming yet I acted blind

I tiptoed on a tightrope trying to make you happy

Caught between flames of passion and arms of fire.

I was nothing to you but you were all that I desired

like a wilting flower in the wake of frost,

Love froze amidst the boundaries that were crossed.

And so I smiled, eyes shimmering with regret,

The way we started is the way we’re gonna end

"Can we be just friends?" a soft-spoken knife,

Severs the ties, rewriting life.

The same sentence that started us only adding one word

Had a whole different meaning our story transferred

A plea for preservation, though my heart disagreed.

You finally got the other foot out the door while I sit here and I bleed.
